WIOA Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Grant

The LA Unified Division of Adult and Career Education (LA Unified Adult) has been awarded a $16.4 million dollar Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant to be used to supplement adult literacy activities at all ten campuses. 90% of the federal grant, which represents 10% of the LA Unified Adult budget, will be used to pay English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE) teacher salaries. The rest is used to fund professional development activities such as professional learning communities (PLCs), pay for supplemental instructional materials, and provide additional support staff across the Division.

LA Unified Adult, which has been participating in this performance-based grant since 1998, is the largest WIOA grant recipient in the state of California. This grant award represents the learning gains that students demonstrate through their Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) pre- and post-tests, English Language (EL) Civics testing, high school equivalency passage and earning high school diplomas.

LA Unified Adult thanks our family of ESL, ABE and ASE teachers, who work tirelessly to help our students improve their literacy skills. We also wish to extend a special thank you to the Performance Advisors, whose dedication and commitment to supporting students and teachers along with the accurate and timely collection of data has generated the third largest WIOA grant in our history.
